"I've been a follower of Ram Dass since the mid 1970s. I've had the pleasure to see him in person. This video is fantastic!! Journey through the discussions about dying and death. It's like watching a historical documentary of the 1960's psychedelic and drug movement that evolved into the Eastern spiritual movement."

“Dying to Know” is an intimate portrait celebrating two very complex, controversial characters in an epic friendship that shaped a generation.

In the early 1960s, Harvard psychology professors Timothy Leary and Richard Alpert began probing the edges of consciousness through their experiments with psychedelics. Leary became the LSD guru, igniting a global counter-cultural movement and landing in prison after Nixon called him 'the most dangerous man in America.' Alpert, on the other hand, journeyed to the East, becoming Ram Dass, a spiritual teacher for an entire generation, teaching service through compassion.

With interviews spanning 50 years, Dying to Know invites us into the future, encouraging us to ponder questions about life, drugs & the biggest mystery of all: death.

We’ll be screening this movie at our upcoming psychedelic cinema club night. In a post-screening discussion, there will be an opportunity to chat about and share perspectives on the film and its key themes.

The event will take place at the Gasworks studio in St. Werburghs. The studio has a living room-style layout, so you can sit down or lie down with a blanket and cup of tea at hand for an ultra-cozy screening experience.

This is a non-profit community event. We intend to create a space for like-minded individuals who are curious about consciousness and the power of psychedelics to connect, share ideas, and learn from one another.

Reviews

"Dying to Know is a complex film that explores a constellation of the issues centering on consciousness, life and death... In this way, the film covers a lot of ground. The gradual debunking of stereotype, the truth of human change through aging and transformation that comes from being at peace and disciplined in thought on the matter of dying…"

“Director Gay Dillingham deftly weaves in both of the men’s stories, using Leary’s impending death in 1996 as the main narrative thread. In excellent footage showing the pair in their later years, the historical giants come off like a long-married couple. They agree that death should be a celebration, not something to be feared."

“Despite periods of what Ram Dass characterizes as both “deep friendship and deep enmity,” the two ended with a visible mutual respect that made peace with their differences. They both saw themselves, “Dying to Know” posits, as adventurers exploring alternate realities, and hearing where they ended up is a trip all by itself.”
