In February 2023, the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA), Australia's regulatory authority for medicines, made a groundbreaking decision that sent ripples through the global community. They reclassified psilocybin and MDMA from prohibited substances to controlled drugs but with stringent conditions. 

These conditions allow for the controlled use of these substances in the revolutionary field of psychedelic-assisted therapy.

Australia emerged as a trailblazer, positioning itself among the pioneers, to officially recognize and regulate these substances as medicines, albeit with rigorous controls.

Australia's leadership extends beyond regulation. In a pioneering move, therapists participating in our extensive psychedelic therapist training program have been administered psilocybin. Each therapist underwent a comprehensive journey, including a preparation session, a dosing session (25 mg psilocybin), and an integration session, providing invaluable insights into the therapeutic process.

SPEAKERS

Dr Bianca Sebben

Dr Sebben is a psychologist based in Brisbane, Queensland, Australia with a special interest in complex trauma, dissociation and working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. Dr. Sebben’s interest in psychedelics began when she was in Mexico completing her PhD in Indigenous Psychology, where she became interested in traditional methods of healing, including plant medicines, and the need to facilitate access to traditional methods of healing to make the medical system more culturally safe and accessible. ​She is a founding Board member for the Australian Multidisciplinary Association for Psychedelic Practitioners (AMAPP), Co-founder and Director of Indigenous Psychedelic-Assisted Therapies (IPAT).

Jem Stone

Jem Stone is a First Nations Woman from the Bundjalung Nation, Educator and Wellness Practitioner who is passionately integrating indigenous knowledge systems into education and wellness spaces through Earth connection, culturally informed trauma integrated healing and decolonised learning methods. Working and training in the wellness industry for over twenty years, Jem is a Cultural Consultant and educator, Wayapa Wuurrk Practitioner and Trainer, We Al-Li and Dadirri facilitator, meditation and yoga instructor and Rebirthing Breathwork Therapist and educator. Jem Stone arrived in healing spaces through her own personal healing journey and continues to walk
her healing path and dedicates much of her time learning from Elders and other cultural teachers. Jem is passionate about creating safe, inclusive, decolonised spaces for healing which inspired Jem to step into the Psychedelic assisted therapies space and co-founded IPAT (Indigenous Psychedelic Assisted Therapies) to ensure First Nations cultural inclusivity, safety and the honouring of original knowledge holders and the original connections to Country and the plants as clinical psychedelic assisted therapies emerge in Australia.

Stephanie Tzanetis

Steph is a Director on the board of PRISM (Psychedelic Research In Science & Medicine), a charity that was formed in 2011 by members of Entheogensis Australis. Steph has extensive experience working in harm reduction services, particularly festival-based harm reduction and drug checking services. She led Harm Reduction Victoria’s DanceWize program between 2013-2021, and has worked with harm reduction, compassionate care, and drug checking services overseas, including DanceSafe USA; Kosmicare, Portugal; and ANKORS, Canada. She is a qualified Australian legal practitioner and also has qualifications in humanities, alcohol and other drugs, and in medical and health law.

Kayla Greenstein

Kayla is a PhD candidate, researching the use of touch, informed consent and the epistemological orientations of psychedelic and MDMA-assisted therapy. Kayla is a committee member of the Australian Psychological Society’s interest group on Psychedelic-Assisted Therapy and the research committee of Students for Sensible Drug Policy. Kayla is the lead author of a comprehensive review of the TGA rescheduling decision and co-author on a taxonomy of regulatory considerations for the medicalisation of. psychedelics and MDMA therapies. Prior to starting a PhD, Kayla worked in domestic violence and sexual assault crisis intervention services, providing expert advice to police, courts, and child protection services on coercive control.

Orsi Fehér (Psycare Austria)

Orsi  Fehér earned her MSc in Communication Science at the University of Vienna in 2018, where she founded the local Students for Sensible Drug Policy (SSDP) chapter and has been elected to serve on the board of the NGO Committee on Drugs at the United Nations. Orsi works as a Research Associate at her University where her projects are mainly concerned with intra-EU mobility. She is also a member of the Psychedelic Society of Vienna and is co-ordinating the Psychedelic Welfare (PsyCare) project in Austria.
