Dreams. What are they? An escape from reality or reality itself? Waking Life is a surreal animation that follows the dreams of one man and his attempt to find and discern the absolute difference between waking life and the dreamworld. As he navigates his journey, he engages in profound philosophical conversations with fascinating characters.

We’ll be screening this unique fantasy picture for our upcoming Psychedelic Cinema Club night, with the opportunity to exchange perspectives and insights about the movie in an open discussion after. Some of the movie's key themes we may touch on include the nature of reality, free will, the meaning of life, and the relationship between dreams and waking life.

SCHEDULE

6.45pm - 7pm: Get settled in, grab a cup of tea and connect with fellow cinema goers and consciousness explorers

7pm - 8.30pm: Film Screening of Waking Life

8.30-9.30pm: Discussing the movie and themes it explores. Sharing insights, questions, reflection and relevant personal stories.

The screening will take place in the Gasworks studio. With a living room-style layout, you can sit down or lie down, with a blanket and cup of tea at hand for an ultra-cosy cinematic experience.

This is a non-profit community event. Our intention is to create a space for like-minded individuals, who are curious about consciousness and the power of psychedelics, to connect, share ideas, and learn from one another.

About Waking Life

Waking Life is about an unnamed young man living an ethereal existence that lacks transitions between everyday events and eventually progresses toward an existential crisis. For most of the film he observes quietly but later participates actively in philosophical discussions involving other characters ranging from quirky scholars and artists to everyday restaurant-goers and friends about such issues as metaphysics, free will, social philosophy, and the meaning of life. Other scenes do not even include the protagonist's presence, but rather, focus on a random isolated person, group of people, or couple engaging in such topics from a disembodied perspective. Along the way, the film touches also upon existentialism, situationist politics, posthumanism, the film theory of André Bazin, and lucid dreaming, and makes references to various celebrated intellectual and literary figures by name.
