Psychedelics were the central component of the counterculture's engagement with healing. Understood at the time against a background of psychiatry, psychoanalysis and eastern philosophy they seemed to offer a solution to the first world's search for meaning. Then everything went wrong.

As interest in psychedelics once again reaches a crescendo, what can our forefathers teach us; and what can we learn from their mistakes?

This online talk will dive into:

  • Is meditation really a substitute for psychedelics?
  • What are the dangers of "therapist breakdown"?
  • Why did some sixties veterans gain so much from their LSD experiences?
  • Is the "bad trip" the negative outcome of a psychedelic encounter, or are there greater hazards?
  • Is the clinic the best place for psychedelics?

Biography

Matthew Ingram is famous in his own head for throwing raves in West Africa in the early nineties, writing the cult Woebot blog which was grist for Chris Morris's "Nathan Barley" character, and setting up the Dissensus forum with the theorist Mark Fisher. He has written for The Wire and FACT magazines. His first book "Retreat: How the Counterculture invented Wellness" is out in July on Repeater.

Matthew Ingram's forthcoming book "Retreat" is a popular and illuminating cultural history of the relationship between wellness and the counterculture. It looks at the lives of key conduits, the likes of Carl Jung, Allen Ginsberg, Jack Kerouac, DT Suzuki, Timothy Leary, Alan Watts, Neem Karoli Baba, Bhagwan Rajneesh, Chogyam Trungpa, Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, and the Dalai Lama as they passed eastern philosophy into western thought.
