Do you sometimes feel a little out of control? Or in need of more sharpness, clarity and calm?

Most of us do, at one time or another. This workshop will provide you with techniques and practices to self-soothe when it feels like your thoughts or body have taken over.

The Sympathetic & Parasympathetic Nervous System

That out of control feeling is usually associated with the sympathetic nervous system, the part of our nervous system that mobilises us into action. If our nervous system detects a threat, real or perceived, it will trigger our fight/flight/freeze response. If there isn’t a real threat, and we do not need the mobilisation of our protective mechanisms, then we need to recruit our parasympathetic nervous system to calm us down…

Enter the Vagus Nerve!

The vagus nerve is the most influential nerve in our parasympathetic nervous system. Known as the body’s superpower, it functions like a natural reset button! Learning how to stimulate and reset your vagus nerve improves your ability to toggle between states of stress and calm (alongside a bunch of benefits for physical wellbeing!), helping us to access the relaxed, collected feeling and respond vs react state that we all desire.

A healthy vagus nerve helps us to respond to triggers mindfully.

When we’re feeling stressed and anxious, it’s usually because of our oversensitive brains. Hard-wired to look out for danger (whether it’s a hungry tiger walking your way, an ambiguous email from your boss or a particular comment from a loved one), our brains sound the alarm and we find ourselves entering into a fight, flight or freeze response.

Moving out of this state isn’t always easy, and can be a lot more challenging for those of us that have experienced some form of trauma (so, everyone basically). Sometimes, we can do some real damage to our lives and relationships while in these activated states. So the faster we can move out of them the better. For everyone!

YOUR FACILITATOR

Jacob Tomkins

Born in London, Jacob worked in marketing and consultancy environments for 11 years before checking out of the city and moving to India in 2015. It was there that he took the full-time turn into wellbeing, training in herbal and plant medicine, nutritional therapy, alignment therapy, mobility and strength training, massage, plus furthering his interest in general gut and skeletal health.

In 2017 he decided to re-align his life completely and build something inspirational from scratch - buying a piece of UK woodland and creating OhmBrella Ltd (www.ohm-brella.com). He has spent the last 18 months building off-grid in the woodland with traditional and sustainable methods.

Jacob provides holistic wellbeing coaching, a woodland retreat space for immersive healing experiences and in-house products and tools for natural healthcare. He runs the woodland as a conservation site, has a blossoming food forest, is powered by off grid power supply and rainwater collection and is heaving with wildlife and beauty. Jacob brings the energy of this land forward into all of his work and sessions, no matter the location.

A student of Iyengar Yoga for 15 years, Jacob has developed within this practice a powerful enquiry into both “Prana” breathing during the “asanas” (positions) practice, and “Nidra” (Direct translation “sleep”), integrating these meditations at the end of each his sessions or classes. He enjoys mixing the ancient yogic language references for the body with modern, scientifically backed anecdotes, bringing recipients of sessions into a meditative, calm and practical-minded healing association with breath and body. The language and neurological connection helps embed good practice and gives his clients memorable tools to take away with them into daily life.
