Wake Up! Start Dreaming......

An introduction to the neuroscience of sleeping and dreaming followed by a workshop on Tibetan Dream Yoga.

What is happening when we are dreaming? Can we improve our ability to explore our dreams? What can we learn from western and eastern approaches to dreaming? Is dreaming good for you?

Dreaming offers all of us the unique opportunity every night to experience and explore an intense psychedelic experience. We may not always remember our dreams, but each night we are given the possibility to delve into this incredible experience.

Many different cultures and theorists have offered explanations for dreaming. However, two that make for a particularly interesting contrast are those offered by recent modern neuroscience research as well as those offered within Tibetan Buddhism. Modern neuroscience has made great progress with understanding which areas of the brain are associated with dreaming and what this tells us about consciousness.

The first part of the session will involve a talk and some discussion around what we know about sleeping, dreaming and why we enter these unique conscious experiences every night.

The second part of the session we will contrast this with the theories of dreaming within Tibetan Buddhism. Dream exploration has a unique place in this tradition and daytime and night-time dream practice is called 'Tibetan Dream Yoga'.

The workshop will include opportunities to reflect and share your own experiences of dreaming as well as learn some traditional practices which help to remember your dreams more vividly at first, and then develop techniques to learn to 'wake up' within your dreams to experience them with full awareness. We will go through some simple but effective daytime meditations and visualisations that have been used for many generations to more fully explore the world of your dreams.
